Matt Ritchie left Newcastle United this summer after his contract expired and while the now free agent awaits to see where his future lies, the club looks to have already decided who gets his iconic shirt number.

During his time at Newcastle, Matt Ritchie wore the number 11 shirt putting him alongside Toon heroes like Tino Asprilla, Peter Lovenkrands, Chris Waddle, Peter Beardsley and the late, great, Gary Speed.

The number 11 was even worn by Patrick Kluivert during his brief stint at St James' Park.

A large chunk of Newcastle's squad returned to training yesterday and the club put out a gallery of the boys in training, and eagle-eyed fans spotted that the number 11 was back in play.

Harvey Barnes looks to have taken over the number 11 shirt

Last summer Newcastle forked out £39million to bring Leicester City's Harvey Barnes to the club, and while he was restricted to just 23 appearances due to injury, he did manage five goals and three assists, and gave the Toon Army a few glimpses of what he's capable of.

Hopefully, next season we will see more of Barnes in action, and given that he has been spotted wearing the number 11 in training, it does hint at a more prominent role in the side.

Fans also got to see the lads all decked out in the new Adidas training gear which looks stunning. The white top really sets off Jason Tindall's teeth.

Joelinton must just love pain

We got to see Sandro Tonali going at it on the bike showing us that he has not been skipping leg day as well as a shot of him out on the grass.

Joelinton was grinning from ear to ear as he got put through his paces, clearly still an absolute machine.

And it wouldn't be a pre-season training gallery without at least one image of a player in mid-air. That honour went to Callum Wilson this time around.
