The Premier League today met to discuss possible changes to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), with the reported decision likely to be very unpopular with Newcastle United.
Indeed, it is very unpopular with us as the decision was to keep things as they are for another season as reported by The Chronicle.
Thankfully, Newcastle had been operating in the transfer market as if PSR was going to continue being a thing and, as such, have got themselves into a much better position in that regard heading into the summer.
However, it's another blow to the game as once again, nothing changes. While the two other options weren't ideal, they would have at least moved the needle, but keeping things exactly as is is killing the game.
Aston Villa proposed a change to the £105 million three-year loss limit, which has been in place for over a decade, and while inflation would have that amount over £200 million these days, Villa only proposed a slight increase to £135 million, and even that was shot down.
With PSR in place for another year, the least the Premier League could have done would have been to increase the loss limit, but even that will remain the same.
We said before how the Premier League often try to 'fix' things and ends up making it 10 times worse; now they are just not even trying.
We had thought that the Anchoring idea would have been brought in as it sets clubs on a level playing field, although there was a lot of resistance to that system too as it would have placed a cap on what players could earn. Football finance expert Kieran Maguire had previously said that Anchoring would have been the way to go for Newcastle as it would have benefitted them the most.
"Anchoring would be excellent for Newcastle because it sets a level playing field in terms of the maximum an individual club can spend. But, at the same time, if they also have to comply with UEFA's rules, that would be the constraint."
The Chronicle's report says that clubs didn't actually vote today (although Sky Sports says otherwise), so this wasn't a democratic decision and therefore, there could be some fallout.
