It seems the Premier League are about to debate a rule change that we can actually get behind even though it will directly affect Newcastle United.

Indeed, the change will affect every club in the Premier League as the plan is now to close the summer transfer window before the 2025/26 season gets underway.

According to The Telegraph, the move is being discussed so that managers can have their squads locked down when the season gets underway.

The past few years have seen the transfer window remain open for the first couple of weeks of the season allowing players who have already played for one club to move to another just a couple of games into the season.

Newcastle may have to move quicker in the transfer market than in previous years

The Premier League is debating closing the summer transfer window before the season starts

That's not so much of an issue on the surface, but if that player then struggles to establish himself at his new club, they are stuck with him as current rules forbid players from representing three teams in a single season.

Not to mention that it's unsettling for players who could still be subject to transfer talks, not knowing whether they are even going to be at the club after their next game. Granted that's a problem in January too, but when the season is new, surely players will just want to know where they are going to be for the next few months at least.

The Premier League are expected to vote on the change on Thursday, with 14 votes required for the motion to pass. However, if there doesn't appear to be much support for the idea during discussions, the vote will be scrapped altogether.

Let's scrap transfer windows and go back to the good old free for all days

The problem the Premier League faces is that other countries won't necessarily fall in line and while players won't be able to move domestically, they could still move abroad making the early closure pointless.

There's also no mention of whether the summer window would open earlier in order to keep the length of the window the same to give sporting directors etc the same amount of time to operate.

Newcastle have, of course, taken advantage of the overlapping transfer window recently, having signed Alexander Isak late in the summer window after he'd already turned out two times for Real Sociedad. But just for neatness, we'd prefer that the window was closed before the season started.

Or, we could just go back to the good old days when there were no windows, and you could just trade all the time. That kind of bedlam could be so much fun in the modern era.
