Last summer, Newcastle United and Liverpool were the subjects of many a transfer headline as rumours persisted that Anthony Gordon would be sold to Liverpool.

Now, 12 months later, the same two clubs are dominating the rumour mill again, but it's Alexander Isak who is at the forefront.

The constant speculation about Gordon last summer definitely had an adverse effect on the winger as his performances suffered amid talks that his head had been turned by interest from the club he grew up supporting.

Indeed, it was so bad that Gareth Southgate felt he couldn't rely on Gordon during the European Championships despite pleas from fans and pundits alike to get him on the pitch.

Alexander Isak has gone into exile as transfer rumours swirl out of control

Anthony Gordon knows what Alexander Isak is going through right now

Gordon has now been speaking to The Chronicle about all of the speculation and the reported PSR-forced move to Liverpool, while Gordon also mentions how he can relate to what Isak is going through right now.

"What I can say, is that it’s been an absolute pleasure to be out the transfer speculation for a summer! It’s the first time in about three years! It’s been so easy, so mentally refreshing.

"It was difficult for me because one, I had the Euros, which was horrendous for me mentally. I was there, I wasn’t playing.

"Then I had the transfer stuff. With PSR, I thought I was going to leave at some point in the window. It didn’t happen. I had to get my head around that to begin with, and then to get my head around it again was hard. I’m a human-being.

"It’s really difficult. That is why I understand what Alex is going through at the moment."

Gordon is refreshed and ready for the new season

Crucially, Gordon goes on to make another point, that he, Alexander Isak and indeed, all footballers are human beings, and sometimes it's easy as fans to lose sight of that.

"For Alex, I feel for him too. It’s difficult. People forget you’re a human-being in that scenario. He will be going through a lot. The club is going through a lot. I hope everyone gets what they want in the end."

Meanwhile, Gordon says that after three years of transfer speculation combined with very little time off, football became a chore, but now he's had a break, he's refreshed and has his appetite for the game back.

Hopefully, that translates to the Anthony Gordon of the 2023/24 season, where he was absolutely unplayable.
