Paul Merson needs to stick to predicting scores and not transfers as he says who will win on Wednesday - Newcastle or Brentford

Newcastle United return to Premier League action after a two-week break from football since lifting the Carabao Cup at Wembley.

The Magpies were in a party mood on Saturday as they paraded the trophy through the city, but it's back to business on Wednesday as Brentford come to St James' Park in search of three points.

Despite the celebrations, the season is far from over for Newcastle who have 10 games left of the Premier League season in which to secure a spot in the Champions League.

Eddie Howe vowed on the Town Moor stage on Saturday to match the fans' passion for the remaining games of the season to deliver Champions League football again.

Paul Merson has predicted a win for Newcastle for his column in Sportskeeda, but rather than focus on the upcoming match, the former Arsenal man has used his platform to once again make unfounded claims about Alexander Isak's future.

"For Newcastle, this game comes after an incredible achievement. They must switch back on quickly though. It was amazing to win the cup, but they need to get into the top four and return to the Champions League next season!

"This isn't the time to relax and Brentford are not easy opponents. At first, Brentford were incredible at home and now they are outstanding on the road. So this is far from an easy game for Newcastle.

"I can't see Newcastle keeping hold of Alexander Isak next season if I'm being honest. I know it sounds unfair but still. I think Arsenal need to sign Isak. If they can get him, Arsenal win the league by 10 points next season! I'm not kidding, I can actually see Arsenal winning the league comfortably if they sign Isak.

"I expect Liverpool to lose some key players this summer and that will severely weaken them. This is the chance for Arsenal to bring in a quality player like Isak and end that Premier League title drought.

"Big game coming up for Newcastle and I expect them to win here.

"Prediction: Newcastle United 2-0 Brentford"

Nobody asked you about Alexander Isak, mate, your job here was to talk about Newcastle v Brentford, not Arsenal winning the league if they sign a player they have no chance of signing.

It's as if he's deliberately ignoring all the facts so that he can live in his own fantasy land where Isak joins Arsenal despite all signs pointing to the contrary.

At least he backed Newcastle to bag the three points, I suppose. Cheers for that.
