In January 2023 Newcastle United made just one signing in the transfer window which many fans and even pundits weren't sure was the right move.
Anthony Gordon became a Newcastle United player after handing in a transfer request at Everton amid their ongoing troubles. He cost the Magpies £45million and many people thought that Newcastle had overpaid for the winger.
We have to admit that we were initially questioning the board on this one, too, but just like Tim Sherwood we have had to eat our words.
The Amazon Documentary showed just how determined Amanda Staveley was to bring Gordon to the club and how hard they worked to make it happen. It showed how much they really believed in him, and they got it spot on.
It wasn't the best of starts to life on Tyneside for Gordon who openly admitted he was shocked by how much Eddie Howe demanded of his players and he knew that he was way off the pace, but he put in the work and now he's the first name on the teamsheet.
Speaking to Premier League Productions, Tim Sherwood has admitted that he had it all wrong about Gordon too.
“He [Gordon] has done very well, when he first went there I thought he was overpriced, but he’s worked with the manager, he’s put him in at the right time and taken him out at the right time. The crowd have taken to him and when the crowd take to you there you feel like a million dollars and he’s relishing the challenge of playing for such a big club."
There are times when it's nice to be proved wrong and this has been one of those times.
Now we have literally run out of superlatives to describe Gordon and what he's achieved at Newcastle this season. He's got our vote for Player of the Season despite being in some good company with Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schar.
Despite cutting short his summer break after competing in the U21s European Championships with England, and playing almost every game this season, Gordon will be hoping there's no rest fo the wicked and he will be involved in Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 squad. If he isn't then, well, it just proves how clueless Southgate is.
