'Outrageous': PSV star says Bruno Guimaraes could have broken his leg as Newcastle United beat PSV last night
It was a tough night for Bruno Guimaraes last night, despite Newcastle United's 3-0 Champions League win over PSV.
The Newcastle captain picked up a knock late in the second half that, after trying to run off, he succumbed to, indicating to the bench his game was done.
With just five minutes to go in the first half, Guimaraes was replaced by Lewis Miley, but there are those who feel that Bruno shouldn't have been on the pitch to pick up that injury in the first place.
Earlier in the half, Bruno made contact with the shin of Joey Veerman after going in for a challenge. It was a nasty contact, and Bruno found himself in the book for the offence.
Joey Veerman couldn't believe Bruno Guimaraes wasn't sent off
The way the TNT Sports commentators were going on about the challenge, you'd think it was an assault with a deadly weapon. When viewed in slow motion, it looked like a horror challenge given where and how Bruno's foot contacted Veerman's leg.
The Dutch star certainly felt that it was a poor challenge, telling Dutch outlet De Telegraaf that it should have been a red card.
"It hurts. It'll probably last a while. It's truly outrageous. He touched the ball first, he said. That's why it wasn't a red card. If this isn't a red card, it's over.
“He puts his foot full force over the ball and comes full force with his studs under my shin guard and on top of my ankle. If you're unlucky, you'll break your leg. I think I was lucky."
Prepare yourself for a hot take
As we said, the slow-motion replays made it look like a really bad challenge, as do the still frames used by the @BBCMOTD X account, but when you watch the incident in real time, it was the most accidental of accidents.
Bruno and Veerman were going for the same ball, and the Brazilian got there first, clearing it away and as his leg comes back down (you know, as they tend to do when in forward motion), Veerman's momentum takes his leg into the direct path of Bruno's foot, and the two collide.
There isn't a human being on this earth who has the reflexes to avoid that collision. This might be a hot take, but we didn't even feel it warranted a yellow card. We're not saying that things couldn't have ended badly; it absolutely was an awful contact, but there was absolutely zero intent there from Guimaraes, who, as Veerman admitted himself, got the ball.
A yellow may have been fair, but the overreaction from Veerman and the TNT Sports commentary team was insane.
