Last year, Newcastle United toyed with the idea of selling Anthony Gordon to Liverpool to fill the shortfall in the accounts so they would comply with PSR.
It was likely a very brief conversation that got shut down before the sentence was even finished, but it took on a life of its own and gained so much traction that it ultimately led to Gordon being given very little game time for England, as Gareth Southgate felt he was distracted.
Gordon hasn't had the same stellar season as he had last year, but he has still been a key figure for Newcastle, and we highly doubt that selling him is on the mind of anyone at the club.
That doesn't mean he won't be linked with moves elsewhere over the summer, of course he will, but we have zero worries that he will be sold.
Newcastle are in a much stronger position in terms of PSR this year, and selling top players is not required. Indeed, the goal this summer is to add to the squad. However, Football Insider's 'expert' Mick Brown didn't get that memo as he believes Newcastle could be powerless to accept a bid for Gordon from Arsenal.
“Arsenal are looking to strengthen out wide.
“We’ve spoken about [Gabriel] Martinelli, and if he leaves they want to bring somebody in who is better than him, and there are a few names on their radar.
“One player they’ve shown interest in is Anthony Gordon.
“They’ve been looking at him, keeping an eye on his situation in case he becomes available.
“Newcastle have a bit of uncertainty about them because of their financial situation.
“If they can offer a lot of money for him, Newcastle might have to accept.
“Then, Arsenal have to decide whether the money it would take to bring him in is worth what he will bring to the team and whether he’s the right fit.
“But he’s still young and there’s a reason they’ve been looking at him for a while.”
Less than 48 hours after throwing Mick Brown a lifeline, he goes and says something stupid again.
Arsenal may well have an interest in Gordon, we can believe that his sources are telling him the truth there, but what 'financial situation' is he referring to? It's not 2024.
It just feels like he's thrown a bit of extra spice on top of the information he's been given to add something to it, but clearly, somebody put dried doc leaves in his coriander pot.
