'One to watch': Chris Waugh now says which Newcastle United star could be at risk of being sold

We've been prepped for a while now that at some point Newcastle United may have to sell a big star in order to fund their future development.

With PSR being the way it is, Newcastle don't really have much of a choice but to sell a top player for a huge sum of money in order to fund further big acquisitions.

It's counterintuitive, to say the least, but this is the state of football right now under these stupid rules.

Newcastle have already done very well to keep their star players at the club and will likely look to do so for as long as possible, or until they absolutely need to sell.

Bruno Guimaraes - one to watch

Chris Waugh says Bruno Guimaraes' future is 'one to watch'

Alexander Isak is constantly being linked with a move to Arsenal, but there's no way we're going to let that one happen.

This is also the view of The Athletic's Chris Waugh who has answered a question about the summer budget while hinting at a big player sale in the future for this week's fan Q&A.

"The warnings have been emerging for a long while that, at some stage, Newcastle will need to cash in on one of their star players to finance a further strengthening of the squad. But Alexander Isak’s value is so high that, unless he pushes to leave, Newcastle will not want to sanction an exit for him, while Anthony Gordon recently signed a contract extension and Sandro Tonali is tied down long-term.

"Bruno Guimaraes’ future is perhaps the one to watch; nobody has yet tested Newcastle’s resolve with an offer and, with Tonali and Lewis Miley, there are potential alternatives already within the squad."

Bruno Guimaraes would be our reluctant choice to leave

It's obviously not ideal to be thinking about selling any of our bigger stars, but if we had to sacrifice one for the 'greater good', we'd probably go with Bruno Guimaraes for the very reasons Waugh mentioned.

Sandro Tonali is coming on brilliantly for us now and is younger than Bruno. Behind him, we have Lewis Miley who has all the potential to be world-class too.

We absolutely adore Bruno, and we love how much he loves it here too. We wouldn't want to entertain selling him before he'd got his hands on a trophy for us, but he is the sale that makes the most sense if we absolutely have to.
