One rule for them, one rule for us; the absurd Scouse Narrative around Trent and Isak
Liverpool fans are getting more hypocritical by the day.
Their favourite slogan "This Means More" went out the window when they maliciously decided to mock Newcastle for celebrating the "Mickey Mouse Cup" in March. Apparently such competitions are 'beneath' the Super League 6...
"YNWA" seems only fit for purpose when you actually wear the Liverpool shirt forever; otherwise that shirt will be burned and you will be serenaded with boos.
And the whole "We don't spend money" argument is a funny one. Seeing as Liverpool are hoping to break the British transfer record twice in the space of one summer window.
It's funny. Because despite Trent keeping his mouth shut and enjoying a stellar season en route to winning his boyhood club a second Premier League trophy - to go with the Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, Super Cup and Club World Cup - Liverpool fans on the whole have made him a persona non-grata. Yet with Alexander Isak, they're licking their lips at every possible faux pas from the Swede; whether that's refusing to go on tour, training with his old club, or informing the club he wishes to explore all other options.
To an extent, football makes hypocrites of us all. Liverpool fans have already tried accusing Newcastle fans of the same behaviour with Yoane Wissa. However, our media isn't photoshopping Wissa in a Newcastle shirt at every opportunity, in fact, Wissa's potential arrival has largely been met with indifference by Newcastle fans. If the clubs can agree a fee, he's okay as a Wilson replacement. But we certainly aren't getting the confetti out because Yoane Wissa is refusing to train. It isn't a good look for him, and we certainly aren't encouraging it.
But the red half of Liverpool is taking this hypocrisy to new levels...
Trent left for free... so what? Are Liverpool skint now?
The main reason Scousers claim that the Trent scenario is miles apart from the Isak one is money; that Trent cost his club a huge payday. While that is hypothetically true, Scousers have been insufferable in their boasting about the expenditure they've had this summer. Trent's replacement came in for just £29.5M; effectively £19.5M when you factor in the money Madrid paid to release Trent from his contract early. So not exactly a fortune to replace. However, They have since shelled out a further £250M on Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Hugo Ekitike, and are of course... eyeing up a £150M move for Alexander Isak. Hardly screams of a club watching the pennies and lamenting a potential Trent windfall is it?
Trent is a boyhood Liverpool fan... and? He won Liverpool everything.
A local boy leaving. Sure, it probably stings in a surface-level way. A bit of a smack to the face. But would you rather Trent played his part in winning every domestic and major European honour and left for nothing? Or won the odd FA Cup and left for £80M?
Fans often lament that football has become too financial. Trophies are what matters; and Trent delivered on the trophy front and then some. I'll hold my hands up now; if Lewis Miley went on to win us every major trophy possible, he could honestly do whatever he wanted. Leave on a free to Sunderland? Hmm... maybe pushing it. Leave on a free to Madrid? Enjoy mate. You've won everything possible for my team and given me enough joy in the sport to last a lifetime.
Yet after winning everything at Liverpool, Trent's legacy at Liverpool stands to be images of his burnt shirts smouldering outside Anfield. Stay classy, eh?
The timing of the departures is jarringly different...
Trent made it clear in April that he was leaving. It was probably clear to the Liverpool hierarchy since Christmas. That gave the Reds a six month period before the transfer window even opened to source a replacement. They acted quickly, and activated Jeremie Frimpong's release clause.
Isak, on the other hand, seemed placated to wait until the summer to discuss a new deal, hopefully with Champions League football achieved. Champions League football was indeed achieved, yet Isak and his entourage spent a majority of the summer winking at Liverpool. While Newcastle put together a package for Hugo Ekitike, Isak watched from the shadows as Liverpool made their intentions clear. "Give us Isak, or we take Ekitike." THIS was the opportunity for Isak to show his hand. But he allowed Liverpool to take Newcastle's ideal Isak replacement, before then throwing his toys out the pram. The timing of it was atrocious. It weakened Newcastle's arm in the rest of the transfer window and made sourcing a new replacement nearly impossible. Benjamin Sesko was the last shiny toy on the shelf, and he was always waiting for an Arsenal or Manchester United.
Now Newcastle face the reality of a summer window where they keep a very unhappy player, or lose him without an adequate replacement.
I hope Liverpool fans crying about Trent into their trophies and mega-million marquee signings can overcome their disappointment just long enough to see the hypocrisy of their ways...
You don't get to behave the way you did to Trent, and then rub salt in the wounds of Newcastle fans because your club has tapped him up.
Disappointing... very disappointing...
