One ray of hope to cling to ahead of Newcastle United's massive night in Paris on Wednesday
On Wednesday night, Newcastle United return to the scene of the big crime of 2023, where they were robbed of a victory and a place in the Champions League knock-out stages.
Newcastle take on Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night at the Parc des Princes, just two years on from the night when VAR awarded a ridiculous penalty to the home side after the ball had bounced up and hit Tino Livramento on the arm in the dying moments of the game. Kylian Mbappe put the ball on the spot and finished with aplomb, levelling the score and ending Newcastle's hopes of progression.
Once again, a win tonight will have huge consequences, albeit not as severe as the last time. Whoever wins tonight will be guaranteed a place in the knock-out stages of the competition, while the loser will have to partake in a two-legged play-off. Something Newcastle could really do without.
Anything could happen tonight with seven clubs on the same points, vying for a top-eight finish.
Newcastle have an unbeaten record against Paris Saint-Germain
Newcastle haven't been the best away from home this season, although they have won on the road in the Champions League, which should offer some hope.
An even better omen is that Newcastle are unbeaten against PSG. Granted, that's only over two games, but still, we're taking what we can here.
Especially as our next two games are on the road at grounds we never win at, Anfield and the Etihad Stadium.
PSG are there to be beaten
It's one win and one draw for the Magpies against the French champions in the Champions League. The Magpies battered PSG 4-1 at St James' Park, and were winning for two-thirds of the game in Paris before that controversial penalty decision.
They might have all the money and all the mega stars, but they aren't unbeatable. Just ask Sporting CP!
When you add in the fact that our players actually turn up on Champions League nights, this could be an intriguing prospect.
