Former Newcastle United striker Jon Dahl Tomasson had a torrid time on Tyneside. After a very promising pre-season the Danish striker couldn't follow up that form when it mattered for the Magpies.
There was clearly a talented player there but it just never clicked for him in the Premier League. However, after leaving Newcastle went on to turn heads at Feyenoord and AC Milan.
Now 48, the Toon flop is carving out a decent career in management and is currently in charge of the Swedish National Team after leaving Blackburn Rovers in February 2024.
The ex-Newcastle striker now has the current Newcastle striker at his disposal for Sweden and it's clear that Tomasson knows what a talent he has available to him.
Alexander Isak is adored on Tyneside and coveted by every big club around Europe as pundits brand the Sweden star as the best striker in the world currently.
When asked about Isak's talents in a recent interview (via The Mirror), Tomasson hailed Isak as the Premier League's best.
"Obviously I’m biased, but Isak is the best striker in the Premier League in my opinion.
"He’s just won a cup and was instrumental for Newcastle in that game, as he always is. Trophies are important milestones in a player’s career.
"He’ll always remember winning the cup and he’ll always remember scoring in the final, it’s a special feeling. I’m extremely happy with him playing for Sweden. He’s a great player and a great person.”
Isak didn't have the best of games for Sweden on Saturday but will be looking to make amends on Tuesday night as they take on Northern Ireland in the UEFA Nations League.
Whatever Isak does or doesn't do on Tuesday night isn't as important to us as him returning from international duty fully fit, so if he draws another blank, we won't mind, as long as he's 100% fit to face Brentford a week on Wednesday.
We need the ice-cool forward at his best for the remainder of the season as we push for Champions League qualification which many journalists insist will be the key to keeping Isak at the club beyond the summer.
For all we don't agree with that assessment at all, it would be nice to have the Champions League qualifications sewn up so we don't even have to think about it.
