Newcastle United just can't seem to catch a break at the moment when it comes to injuries.

A post released on X last night by the Sweden National set-up confirmed that Newcastle's record-signing Alexander Isak has had to withdraw from the squad for their upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers.

The post read:

“Alexander Isak leaves the men's national team's European Championship qualifying squad. Striker came to the gathering with an injury from Sunday's league match. After an examination by the national team's medical team, it is now clear that Alexander Isak is not eligible to play in the next week.”

Hopefully it's just a precaution more than anything serious as Isak's form has been phenomenal for the Magpies so far this season, with Eddie Howe calling him 'magnificent' after the West Ham game. Losing him for any length of time now would be a huge blow.

There has been no further clarification on what the injury is at the time of writing, but Newcastle fans will be awaiting news with all extremities crossed.

With Sven Botman, Joelinton, Joe Willock and Harvey Barnes currently on the casualty list, adding another first-team star in Isak is the last thing we need.

Fortunately it is the international break so the aforementioned players have two weeks to work on their fitness in the hope of a return to action when the season recommences. Except for Harvey Barnes who we may not see until Christmas.

It has been a long time since Newcastle had this many first-team players missing at the same time. It's also been a long time since we've had the squad depth to cope.
