'Not sure who was worse': Alan Shearer takes swipe at Manchester United after dramatic Newcastle United win
Newcastle United pulled off one of their wins of the season at St James' Park last night, thanks to a late Will Osula worldie as the 10-men of the Toon beat the 12-men of Manchester United.
Referee Peter Bankes was at the centre of controversy once again after Newcastle had already lodged a complaint about the whistler earlier in the season.
Whether they decide to lodge another one after last night's howler, we're not sure, but as Jacob Ramsey's red card was the result of receiving two bookings, it can't be appealed.
Bankes sent off Jacob Ramsey just before half-time, claiming that the Toon midfielder dived to win a penalty, which several replays showed not to be the case. Ramsey didn't even raise his hands when he fell in the area; there was no appeal; he simply lost his balance, but the referee saw it differently and went to his pocket.
Alan Shearer took aim at Manchester United and Peter Bankes on X
The referee seemed to lose his grip on the game the longer it went on, with Alan Shearer taking to X to say he wasn't sure which was worse on the night, Manchester United or the referee, after already taking aim at Bankes in a previous post.
"The louder the crowd gets the more this referee looks petrified and confused!!! #NEWMUN"
"Great win for the Toon with 10 men and deserved. 👏🏻👏🏻Not sure who was worse. The Ref or Man Utd. #bothhopeless"
Newcastle could have hammered Man United into the ground if they'd kept 11 men on the field
Manchester United were well off the pace last night as Newcastle inflicted Michael Carrick's first defeat since he replaced Ruben Amorim.
If you'd just started watching the game in the second half you'd have no idea which side was down to 10-men and if you had to guess, you'd probably have gone with Man United.
Newcastle were good value for their win, and we can't help but wonder what the score might have been if Peter Bankes had stopped dishing out cards like it was Christmas.
