The fight between Liverpool and Newcastle United over the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike has taken yet another twist.

Italian transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has been providing plenty of updates as this saga between Newcastle and Liverpool unfolds.

Meanwhile, Newcastle fans are starting to notice how Romano's posts often seem to favour the Premier League champions, almost as if he's being told what to say by the Liverpool media team.

It might be paranoia by Newcastle fans, it might just be Romano relaying what he's being told, or it might be that he's being told what to say for a back-hander. Either way, right now, Fabrizio Romano's standing as a reliable source is waning amongst the Toon Army.

Newcastle have walked away from Hugo Ekitike...

Romano's latest update is that Newcastle have left the table after not agreeing to increase their initial rejected bid.

"🚨🇫🇷 Understand Newcastle have now already left talks for Hugo Ekitike, deal considered off at this stage.

"#NUFC now focus on different targets as since Monday bid got rejected, Liverpool entered race + there were no advances with the Magpies.

"Liverpool are now advancing 🔴👀"

...Or have they?

There are several scenarios that could be true here. Either what Romano has said is entirely accurate with zero context, or what he said is accurate but with the context that Newcastle will feel it's mission accomplished by getting Liverpool to divert their attention elsewhere, leaving Alexander Isak alone.

A third option is that it's all bullshido and Newcastle are still at the table, working on an improved offer.

Only those directly involved will know for sure, but we wouldn't be surprised if we make an improved offer, nor would I be surprised if we walked away and ultimately announced the signing of a young, exciting forward from elsewhere that nobody was even looking at.

It's keeping us busy, this one.
