Bayern Munich chiefs didn't endear themselves to Newcastle United fans following Nick Woltemade's record-breaking move to Tyneside in the summer.

Bayern had identified Woltemade as a priority target for their summer transfer business, particularly after the Germany Under-21 international picked up the Golden Boot as his side finished European Championship runners-up to England in the summer.

The Bundesliga giants weren't budging on their valuation of the striker, however, and neither were VfB Stuttgart. Newcastle had just a couple of days left of the transfer window to find a striker after seeing several other targets go elsewhere, and were at a point where they knew they'd have to pay big money.

Newcastle offered Stuttgart what they were asking, and Woltemade was soon a Newcastle player. To say that Bayern took it badly would be a mild understatement with a couple of their chiefs speaking publicly about the deal, even calling Newcastle 'idiots'.

Nick Woltemade didn't have to think for long before deciding to join Newcastle

Uli Hoeneß was one of those outspoken chiefs who was less than kind about Newcastle's transfer deal, and now Nick Woltemade has revealed to Stern that Hoeness actually messaged him after the Newcastle deal went through to wish him well.

“Mr Uli Hoeneß sent me a WhatsApp message and wished me all the best for the new season. I was very pleased with the appreciation Mr Hoeneß showed me.

“I had two days to think it over. But I didn't have to think about it for long anyway, because Newcastle United is a great club that plays in the strongest league in the world. My goal has always been to compete with the best.

“It was crazy (the noises about the price tag). But I only caught glimpses of it because I don't read any stories about myself anymore. All footballers say that. But we don't believe it.

“During all that transfer saga, I was on vacation for three weeks, first at Lake Como, then in Mallorca. I turned my phone off because it was my annual leave and I wanted to clear my head. You can't do that if you're constantly reading about yourself and possibly getting annoyed because things are being misrepresented.”

Nick Woltemade is a Geordie

Woltemade had previously addressed the comments made by Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in which he branded Newcastle as 'idiots', saying that he doesn't believe he meant anything derogatory by it.

At the end of the day, who cares what was said because Nick Woltemade is a Newcastle player and he's doing an excellent job at it, too.

He's clearly loving life on Tyneside alongside his German international teammate Malick Thiaw. Long may it continue.
