Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has been handed the task of tying to end the trophy drought at England after Gareth Southgate came so close.

Gareth Southgate, for all his brand of football was painful to watch, did get England to two consecutive European Championship finals but couldn't find that winning formula in the final game.

After the latest heartbreak in the summer, Southgate took the decision to step down as England boss. While The FA installed England U21 boss Lee Carsley to the role on an interim basis, a permanent appointment has been made in the form of Thomas Tuchel who has been without a job since leaving Bayern Munich.

Newcastle fans will have been glad to see an appointment made to end the speculation over Eddie Howe, but how will Newcastle's England hopefuls react?

Gordon and Pope will have to prove their worth to the new England boss

Anthony Gordon was selected regularly by Lee Carsley after sitting out the majority of Euro 2024, but there's a feeling that he's still just on the edge of being an England regular. However, if he keeps his head down and plays like we know he can, there's no way Tuchel can overlook him.

Nick Pope is on the fringes of the England side too, however with Jordan Pickford losing his head lately, Pope has a chance to establish himself again.

Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall are the interesting ones. Hall has been performing brilliantly for the U21s while Livramento has been in the past two senior squads without playing a single minute.

Thomas Tuchel was at Chelsea with Hall and Livramento

Both players were at Chelsea at the same time as Tuchel and it was actually the German who gave Lewis Hall his Cheslea debut, so we know already how he feels about the Newcastle left-back.

It was a slightly different story for Tino Livramento who was actually sold to Southampton by Tuchel, however, he did tell Hampshire Live afterwards that he tried to keep Livramento at the club, so it's clear there's an affinity there too.

"Yes of course he was highly rated. We did everything to keep him here, to show him his future and his possibilities to compete for a position in our team.

"He decided to go, that was his decision and you sometimes have to accept. There are not hard feelings because we can show him possibilities and then it is on the player. He was of course competing with Reece James and Cesar Azpilicueta on the right wing-back position.

"I think it was an ideal position to fight because the group wasn’t too big. There was a big chance for him to make it all the way. He decided to go and it’s fair enough, we wish him all the best. We saw the potential, he decided to go another way and fight for a place at Southampton."

Could we be about to see the Newcastle lads both featuring in the England senior side under Tuchel? Both are maybe a little way off that level right now, but it's only a matter of time.
