A few weeks ago it was revealed that Newcastle United would partake in a couple of pre-season friendlies in Japan but the rumour was swiftly shot down by the club.

There is no smoke without fire, however, and the club have confirmed this morning that the rumours were indeed true.

Posting on the official website and social media, the Magpies will travel to Japan this summer to participate in two pre-season friendlies as part of the J.League International Series.

Last year Newcastle headed to the United States for a pre-season tournament put on by the Premier League as they look to expand their global reach.

Plenty of big clubs have chosen to warm up in Japan over the years

Newcastle follow in the footsteps of many bit European clubs in choosing to prepare for their upcoming season by playing friendlies in Japan with Paris Saint-Germain, Celtic and Inter Milan all taking part in a pre-season tournament there last summer

Eddie Howe is looking forward to the games calling them a 'unique experience' for the players.

"We are pleased to be visiting Japan this summer. It's an amazing country and it will be a unique experience for our players, staff and supporters.

"We will be taking on two strong teams at two special stadiums, and I'm sure they will present the type of physical tests we need at that time as we build towards next season."
