Newcastle United may have made the biggest transfer blunder of the summer already.

Earlier this month Newcastle walked away from a deal with Valencia for Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili after claiming their £35million demands were too high.

After his heroics against Czechia in their previous game, Mamardashvili was in inspired form again last night as Georgia beat Portugal 2-0.

Mamardashvili received plenty of praise in commentary for his efforts at keeping the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo at bay pulling off some top saves to keep a clean sheet in a historic win for Georgia.

Giorgi Marmadashvili has been in superb form for Georgia

Ange Postecoglou was full of praise for Giorgi Marmadashvili

Adding to the praise was Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou who was in the ITV studio.

“An outstanding goalkeeper, Mamardashvili. He is one that everyone is tracking. He has had a strong season at Valencia.

“When you have got a good goalkeeper. A strong goalkeeper and in-form, then he keeps you in those games and then you have the quality up the other end and they can cause problems.”

Newcastle may have messed up walking away too early

Marmadashvili's performances will only serve to embolden Valencia who will demand more and more money for the 23-year-old stopper as they've resigned themselves to losing him this summer having already signed his replacement.

Newcastle may be wondering now if they have messed up not staying at the table for who is probably the best goalkeeper at Euro 2024.

Oh well, there's always James Trafford.
