Newcastle United's Matt Targett has opened up about his move to Middlesbrough after getting on scoresheet
Matt Targett sealed a loan move away from Newcastle United in the summer, travelling down the A19 to Middlesbrough.
After making his successful loan move into a permanent switch at Newcastle, things only went downhill for Matt Targett on Tyneside.
A slew of injuries kept the £15 million man out of the first team more often than he was ever in it, which meant Newcastle were paying decent wages to a player who was simply never available.
It led to quite a bit of resentment from fans who found some of his excuses for missing games to be laughable. It's probably a bit harsh, but had our dream at his feet and he was skipping games because of an eczema flare-up? Come on.
Matt Targett is loving life at Middlesbrough after his summer move
Rob Edwards swooped to take Targett off our hands on loan this season and the left-back rewarded the Boro boss's faith with a goal on Saturday.
Speaking after the game, Targett spoke to Teesside Live about how well he's fitting in at his new club and mentioned how difficult the last couple of years have been.
“It’s been a long time since I scored one and I’m not blessed with goalscoring ability! But I’m delighted to help the team. Obviously when you’re not playing and you have dark times, these moments are more special when they come. It’s not all highs in football. You inevitably have your lows. But you remember these moments and you build on them.
“It’s been easy to settle because they’re a great bunch of lads. There was quite a bit of change at the club this summer. But credit to the coaching staff and all the lads, they’ve all made me feel very welcome, which is great. It’s been pretty easy for me.
“The role is different. I would say my natural qualities aren’t as a one-vs-one attacker. I’d say I prefer it when I have someone to link up with. I have played it a few times before. It’s a tricky position. But, I’m enjoying it and I’m open to learning. I’m here to help the team. Hopefully I am doing that and continue to do so.”
Hopefully Matt Targett can earn himself a permanent switch
Fingers crossed for Target that he can stay fit and keep helping Middlesbrough so that he can earn himself a permanent move away from Newcastle.
We don't mean that to sound as harsh as it did, but there's clearly no room for him in Eddie Howe's squad, and it's best for all involved for him to move on.
He's taken to life at Boro really well, so we hope it all works out for him and we can reach an agreement for him to move there permanently in the summer.
