Newcastle United's Joelinton handed chance to shine as Brazil beaten by Japan in friendly
Brazil fell to a 3-2 defeat to Japan today, with both Newcastle United stars getting time on the pitch in their international friendly.
Carlo Ancelotti took Joelinton to Asia to get a closer look at Newcastle's midfield enforcer as he starts thinking about his World Cup squad, with Brazil already qualified for next year's tournament.
Joelinton sat out the win over South Korea last week but got off the bench today during the 3-2 defeat, replacing his teammate Bruno Guimaraes just before the hour mark.
Brazilian media delivered their verdict on the players, and while Bruno received plenty of praise, it wasn't such a good day for Joelinton.
Bruno Guimaraes shone again for Brazil before being replaced by Joelinton
Globo Esporte handed Bruno Guimaraes a score of 7.5/10 once again.
“Another good performance from the midfielder, who is gaining prominence for the national team.
“Just as he did against South Korea, he provided a beautiful assist for the first goal. He was also important in marking, with interceptions. He came off early in the second half, in the first round of substitutions, and the team felt his absence.”
Joelinton failed to impress Brazilian media
Meanwhile, Joelinton didn't fare so well with the same outlet, handing him a meagre 5.5/10.
“He had the best chance in the 22nd minute, after a good triangulation with Cunha and Rodrygo, but he was off balance and finished poorly. He also had a weak shot from outside the box in stoppage time.”
Time is running out for Joelinton to make a strong enough impression on Ancelotti to be selected for next year's World Cup. You can do this, Joey!
