Newcastle United's hopes of signing 21-year-old Spanish striker appear to be over after Monday night incident
Newcastle United can now probably cross off another name from their ever-decreasing list of striker targets.
Last night FC Porto took on Gil Vicente, beating them 2-0 on their own turf; however reported Newcastle target Samu Agehowa's role in the win was minimal after he was forced off after just 30 minutes.
Samu looked in visible pain and even cried as he walked off the pitch, suggesting that his injury could keep him out of action for a few weeks.
While Craig Hope claimed on X this morning that Samu was never a realistic target for Newcastle, with the Magpies having stepped away after the initial enquiry phase, it now looks as though that slight chance is now zero.
Samu Agehowa courted a mixed reaction amongst Newcastle fans
There had been a lot of love for Samu amongst the Newcastle fanbase; however, there were still plenty who felt that he'd been overhyped.
The 21-year-old was outstanding for FC Porto last season, bagging 19 goals in 30 games and adding two already this season. However, the Liga Portugal isn't exactly the same standard as the English Premier League.
Whether the Spanish forward would have been able to make the step up to the Premier League was the debate, and if Newcastle did walk away after learning of his £80 million asking price, it suggests that those inside the club didn't think he could do so quickly enough to justify paying a high fee.
Samu's injury looks likely to rule him out of a summer move
The injury he picked up last night looked like it would rule him out for at least two weeks, so it now looks almost certain that he'll be staying at Porto for the immediate future.
Newcastle's list of potential targets keeps getting shorter, and time is running out. It's going to be a tense couple of weeks for the Magpies.
Alexander Isak had better get his head on straight and return to training because it looks like he's staying put.
