It was derby day on Sunday as St James' Park hosted the Women's Championship game between Newcastle United Women and Sunderland Women.

The Magpies had a goal to beat the Women's Championship attendance record of 15,387 which was only just set in October.

Unsurprisingly, that record came in the Wear-Tyne Derby at the Stadium of Light, but the Black Cats didn't even get to hold the record for half a year before Sunday's game annihilated the previous record.

A whopping 38,502 fans turned out to watch Sunday's game at St James' Park in which the Newcastle lasses won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Shania Hayles.

Newcastle's 'cheap trick' massively paid off

Of course, a large chunk of those fans likely only attended to witness the first lifting of the Carabao Cup trophy at St James' Park as Bob Moncur and Darren Eales paraded the trophy out at half-time.

It was dubbed by many as a cheap trick by the club to get the attendance up, but it clearly worked, so fair play to them.

As for the actual match, it was far from a classic as Newcastle absolutely dominated possession but struggled to do anything meaningful with it.

Amber Keegan Stobbs said she 'blacked out' while celebrating the win over Sunderland

It took substitute Hayles to break the deadlock with a tidy finish at the Gallowgate End to settle the tie.

The scenes are full time were a great sight though with the lasses celebrating their double over Sunderland like they'd won the league.

Indeed, Newcastle's captain, Amber Keegan Stobbs told The Northern Echo that she feels like she blacked out while celebrating the victory.

Any win over the Mackems is worth a blackout, to be fair.
