Becky Langley's Newcastle United Women side were beaten 2-1 by Hashtag United Women in the FA Women's National League Cup final at Kenilworth Road this afternoon.
Newcastle sit atop the WPL Premier Divison North with just one league defeat to their name this season with a 12-point gap to second place, meanwhile today's opponents Hashtag United sit second in the WP Premier Division South five points off top.
However, it was the southerners who emerged victorious in today's final despite Newcastle taking the lead in the tie.
There's just something about Newcastle United and cup finals isn't there?
Newcastle took the lead on 16 minutes via an own goal by Hashtag's Malika Apinda but Macey Nicholls took just three minutes to cancel that out and the half-time whistle came with the sides at 1-1.
Jasmine McQuade almost restored the lead for Newcastle two minutes into the second half but her effort was kept out by a superb save.
Then despite Newcastle's dominance in the game, Hashtag grabbed their second of the game via Phoebe Williams with 20 minutes left to play.
Another nearly moment for a Newcastle United team, but the lasses are still on course to gain promotion to the second tier of the women's game at the first time of asking since becoming a professional outfit.
We'll chalk this one up to a learning experience.
Silverware is coming for the men and the women, of that we're certain. We just have to be patient.
