While talks are well underway identifying potential targets for the January transfer window, Newcastle United will also have one eye on the summer window.

The winter window is notoriously difficult to navigate, and as such, any targets are very carefully curated in order to minimise having to overpay.

In the summer, clubs are more willing to negotiate and, therefore, bigger deals are often completed in the off-season.

The latest player linked with Newcastle in The Chronicle will definitely be a summer target, given their contract situation.

Newcastle are once again eyeing Scott McTominay

Fresh from sending Scotland to the World Cup for the first time in 28 years, Scott McTominay has found himself back on Newcastle's radar amid rumours that he's unsettled in Italy.

Newcastle were linked with McTominay endlessly before he left Manchester United for Napoli in a £25 million deal.

We were never keen on signing the Scotland international, but since he went to Napoli, he became world-class, even landing himself a Ballon d'Or nomination, so we'd certainly be a lot more open to a potential deal now.

Scott McTominay is open to a move to Newcastle

Given his meteoric rise since moving to Italy, and the fact that he's under contract with Napoli until 2028, it's very unlikely that a deal for McTominay would come cheap for Newcastle, which is why it seems very much like a summer transfer rather than a cheeky winter swoop.

On the positive side, it's believed that McTominay is seeking a return to the Premier League and would be open to a move to Newcastle to work with Eddie Howe.

It might be a bit too soon to say how this one is going to work out, but we're a lot more excited by the idea of McTominay now than we were when he was at Man United.
