Newcastle United were absolutely buzzing that they beat out the rest of the footballing world in signing Australian youngster Garang Kuol in 2022.

The 18-year-old had broken into the Australian team and was part of the Socceroos World Cup squad as he awaited his move to Newcastle to be finalised. His involvement in the World Cup allowed him to obtain a work permit in the UK without having to have played in Europe first, so a move to loan him out to the continent when he arrived was no longer necessary.

That resulted in a loan move to Scottish club Hearts, which turned out to be a disaster. As indeed was his next loan move to FC Volendam. Kuol picked up an injury last season that prevented him from going out on loan again; however, that seemed to ultimately work in his favour as he ended up playing for the Magpies reserves and started scoring regularly and finally started to repay that faith that was shown in him.

However, the delay in his development due to poor loan moves has caused the Magpies to rethink their strategy, with The Athletic now reporting the effect that it will have on new signing Antonio Cordero's future.

Garang Kuol was Newcastle's cautionary tale

Newcastle have learned lessons from Garang Kuol and Yankuba Minteh's loan moves

Antonito will be set on a (minimum) 24-month progression path, as will all new young recruits.

Great care will be taken when selecting a club for the youngsters to move to on loan, while it feels like there'll be no huge pressure to develop straight away, which should give the youngsters time to get comfortable and settled before we expect miracles.

Newcastle learned a lot from the mistakes made with Kuol, but equally learned just as much after getting things so right with Yankuba Minteh.

Don't expect to see Antonio Cordero in action for Newcastle anytime soon

While nobody wanted to sell Minteh before he'd even kicked a ball for the club, there's no denying that the fact that he did so well on loan at Feyenoord under Arne Slot contributed massively to the fact that Newcastle were able to make a £29 million profit on him without him ever pulling on a black and white shirt.

With PSR still lingering around like a bad smell, Newcastle will be hyperaware of what a difference having young players with tremendous value can make to their bottom line if they end up in a pickle.

So, while Antonio Cordero continues to perform with Spain in the U19 European Championships, we shouldn't expect to see him in competitive action for Newcastle anytime soon, but depending on the timing of things, we may get a pre-season glimpse.
