Newcastle United got their fingers burned badly by Crystal Palace last summer after they were played like a fiddle in negotiations over a move for England centre-back Marc Guehi.

However, despite this, Newcastle are expected to try again this summer as the defender is seen as the ideal signing for Eddie Howe's defence.

We expect that Newcastle will be more guarded this time around, and also much more willing to walk away from the deal if Steve Parish decides to start playing games again.

To potentially grease the wheels, though, it has been suggested that Newcastle could send someone Palace's way.

Joe Willock to swap clubs with Marc Guehi this summer?

Joe Willock has been recommended to Steve Parish as a Crystal Palace signing

On The Chronicle's Everything is Black and White podcast, it was suggested that Joe Willock could be used as a makeweight for a deal between Crystal Palace and Newcastle.

“I do feel for Joe Willock, because there's clearly a talent there. When you've come into replace someone like Joelinton, it's always going to be difficult to leave your mark but it does feel now and ever, doesn't it?

"I've been told that transfer chiefs at Crystal Palace have recommended Willock to Steve Parish and that they think they can get him. I think that move would work out for them.

"But what I want more than anything - is it to work out here because Joe Willock is at the right age. We know he's got talent. We know he's got that ability. He's different to any one of those midfielders that he's battling a place for and with the need for a large squad next season, he'd be absolutely crucial.

"But at the moment, it feels like he's a bit of a passenger and he's being carried.”

Could we get £25 million for Joe Willock?

We echo most of what was said there by Andrew Musgrove, we're not as enthusiastic about Willock sticking around at Newcastle. We feel he's had plenty of chances to kick on but fluffed pretty much every one.

It might work out for him elsewhere, and we could see him doing well at Crystal Palace if he can remain fit.

Whether we use Willock as part of a deal for Guehi or as an entirely separate transaction, it could work out well for the Magpies in terms of repairing the relationship between the two clubs and potentially getting a more favourable deal for Marc Guehi.

Whether we can recoup our £25 million outlay on Joe Willock remains to be seen. He should still be worth that much, maybe even more, given that he's Premier League-proven and English.
