Newcastle United to battle Jose Mourinho for signature of Juventus striker with summer exit increasingly likely
Newcastle United are looking for goal-scoring reinforcements to help ease the burden on Alexander Isak and to give Eddie Howe more options.
The Magpies have been linked with a move for Jonathan David who will become a free agent in the summer, although a deal is expected to be very difficult for the Magpies to do with so many other clubs interested.
Several other strikers have been mentioned with Liam Delap from Ipswich seemingly positioned in second place in the priority list.
However, the Magpies could go back to Juventus to try and land Serbian striker Dusan Vlahovic after running an eye over him a couple of years ago.
Newcastle have kept an eye on Dusan Vlahovic for years
When Newcastle were last looking at Vlahovic he was flourishing in Serie A and would have cost a pretty penny, but these days his performances for The Old Lady aren't cutting it and he is about to enter the last year of his contract.
It's a situation that Gazzetta dello Sport via TuttoJuve believes Newcastle, Galatasaray and Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce are looking to exploit.
Newcastle have been credited with an interest in Vlahovic already heading into this summer, so it does feel like there's some weight behind this rumour.
Vlahovic to Newcastle isn't a deal we can see getting done
Dusan Vlahovic had a blinder of a season in 2021/22, scoring 24 goals for Fiorentina, which is when Newcastle started to pay attention, however, it was Juve who won the race for the striker, but since then his best scoring return in Serie A has been 16 goals in 2023/24.
This season, he has managed just 10 goals, showing a steady decline since his move to Juventus.
Newcastle will need to do a deep assessment of his drop-off to see if it's something that they believe can be reversed before making a move.
Vlahovic's name still carries weight and he is still only 25, so it could be a case of an Eddie Howe masterclass in rejuvinating a struggling player. However, we don't expect that we'll chase too hard on this one, if at all.
