Newcastle United to abandon 'anime' crest design following fan backlash and current badge could yet remain
Newcastle United had spoken about a rebrand for the club involving a new crest, replacing the existing badge, which has been in use by the club since 1983.
For a lot of fans, the current badge is the only one they've known. Although Adidas reviving previous badges on alternative kits has brought attention back to some retro crests.
When the club announced it was looking to revamp the badge, a large section of the fanbase revolted.
Then, when a proposed design leaked from the meetings being held about the badge, it was perhaps the most united this fanbase has ever been.
Newcastle United may now keep the current design or just focus on minor tweaks to help with scaling
We aren't as precious about the badge as many fans are - it's not the first time it has changed, and it won't be the last - we see the club's point when they say they want to try and smarten up the badge, make it a bit more simplified to go along with the digital age.
However, that squashed frog version of the crest is absolutely not the way to go, and thankfully, Craig Hope has revealed in his Newcastle Confidential column that the club has ditched the plan to move to that design.
Instead, it's likely that they will keep the current design, but they will focus on the badge's symmetry and aspect ratio.
The Fan Advisory Board were not happy with the consultation process
The Fan Advisory Board, who were consulted on the new design, hit back at the voting process too, saying that they felt they were being led down an alley, as there was no option to vote to keep things as they are.
That option is now going to be on the table, and no decision will be made without further consultation.
Again, we're not too bothered if the club opts to change up the badge. A new crest would signify a new era, but they have to get it right, and that 'anime' design was absolutely vile. We'd definitely rather just stick with what we've got than go with that horrific thing.
