Newcastle United summer transfer appears on The Athletic's list of worst deals of summer chosen by agents
Football transfers always carry a significant risk. When a club buys a player, they're never going to get the same performances as the ones that drew them to that player in the first place. You just have to hope that what you get is better.
Newcastle United recruited well in the summer overall, and if we're being honest, few people could have predicted just how well Nick Woltemade would have taken to life in the Premier League.
His transfer is definitely a case of getting more than you bargained for, even if we did seem to overpay at the time.
However, Newcastle also forked out £55 million for another striker who has yet to even train with his new club.
Yoane Wissa was named as one of the worst transfers of the summer
Yoane Wissa's move to Newcastle from Brentford has been identified by several agents and journalists in The Athletic as one of the worst transfers of the summer.
It's probably largely down to the injury that has since kept Wissa from making his debut, but at the same time, a lot of it will come down to the fact that Newcastle spent £55 million on a player who turned 29 three days later.
Top of the pile of poor transfers, however, sits Benjamin Sesko, who turned down more money to move to Newcastle United, instead opting for Manchester United, where he's really struggled to adapt to the Premier League.
Alexander Isak not being higher on the list than Yoane Wissa is crazy
Second on the list is another player who turned his back on a move to Newcastle in James Trafford, who went back to Manchester City instead. Soon after signing for City, though, Pep Guardiola went out and bought Gianluigi Donnarumma, who has been handed the number one spot at the Etihad.
We think Liverpool has dodged a bullet not having Alexander Isak high up on the list, given how much they paid and how little they've got for their money so far. If Wissa is on the list, then surely Isak is worse.
Weirdly, Isak appears quite high up on the best transfers list, which was released shortly after. Big Six bias really is unreal.
