Newcastle United said to be in talks with 'important' defender over new deal despite current injury
It sounds as though Fabian Schar's Newcastle United story may not be coming to an end after all.
The 34-year-old is in the final year of his contract at Newcastle, and given Ross Wilson's aim is to reduce the average age of the squad, there was a very real possibility that the Swiss defender wouldn't be offered another extension.
When we saw Fabian Schar go down injured in the game against Leeds United, it was clear immediately that he was set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
We've seen Schar run off all kinds of heavy knocks in the past, so when he immediately signalled that he was in trouble, we knew it was serious.
Newcastle are in talks over a contract extension for Fabian Schar
Eddie Howe confirmed after the game that Schar had been taken to the hospital, which caused many fans to wonder if that was the last we'd seen of Schar in a Newcastle shirt.
Some even questioned whether it would be the last we see of him on the pitch at all, but instead it looks like it's going to be a 12-week layoff and he could return before the end of the season.
Eddie Howe has often spoken about how 'important' Schar is to the team, and his appearance count under Howe certainly backs that up, so it's no real surprise that The Chronicle are reporting that there is a strong possibility that the veteran will be given another year.
Fabian Schar wants to end his career at Newcastle
Fabian Schar returned to the starting lineup for Newcastle after Sven Botman picked up another injury, and he slotted in well alongside the man who replaced him initially, Malick Thiaw.
There will come a time when we all have to admit that Schar is getting a bit long in the tooth, but we're not ready to admit that yet, so we're happy that he's in talks over a new contract.
Schar himself has spoken about his desire to end his career at Newcastle, and we hope he's given that opportunity.
