Newcastle United could certainly make use of an extra central defender or two going forward with the Magpies fielding an ageing defence this season.

That's not to say that the old boys aren't doing a good job by any means, but a bit more youth to go alongside Sven Botman if the Dutchman is ever fit certainly wouldn't go amiss.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi was, of course, the subject of much speculation last summer, and even though he has very kindly scored an own goal in both Premier League matches against Newcastle this season, we're not convinced that the England defender will be a priority again this summer.

However, this doesn't mean that Eddie Howe isn't looking at past targets altogether with a familiar name back in the frame.

Kim Min-Jae back on Eddie Howe's whishlist

Newcastle missed out on Kim Min-Jae in 2023 but are ready to try again

Two years ago, Newcastle were one of several clubs looking to take South Korean defender Kim Min-Jae off Napoli's hands with Bayern Munich winning that particular battle.

Now, Newcastle are looking to take him off the Germans' hands this summer, according to Foot Mercato.

Their report suggests that the 28-year-old is open to leaving Bayern this summer and is willing to listen to offers with Newcastle and Chelsea having reached out already over a potential summer switch.

Kim Min-Jae hasn't hit the same heights at Bayern as he did at Napoli

After impressing at Napoli, the Korean has gone off the boil slightly at Bayern, and a move could be the boost he needs to rediscover his previous form.

Granted, he's not the youngster we were hoping for to come in and develop alongside Botman, but he's still a few years younger than our current crop and we know he's capable of being a rock at the back.

The big thing will be how much Bayern will be asking as a transfer fee for the towering defender and whether Newcastle will feel that it's worth the risk, and of course, who sits above him on Eddie Howe and Paul MItchell's list of targets.
