Newcastle United made it a clean sweep for the Sela Weekender as they followed up last night's win over Girona and this afternoon's Women's victory on penalties over AC Milan with a 1-0 win against Stade Brestois.

That means that Newcastle United can now add the Sela Cup to their trophy cabinet alongside last season's cup, the Diriyah Season Cup and the Certificate of Completion for the Intertoto Cup.

Today's game was much less entertaining than the 4-0 battering of Girona, and given that that game completely petered out in the second half, that's saying a lot.

Harvey Barnes' first-half goal was the difference between the two sides after he picked up on a brilliant long ball by Lloyd Kelly, nicked inside pulling the Brest defence all over the shop before firing home.

Will Osula scored a beautiful goal that was ruled out for offside

Debutant Will Osula had the ball in the back of the net in the first half too latching on to a through ball and calmly finishing beyond the Brest keeper in a one-on-one situation, but the linesman's flag went up and the goal was ruled out for offside.

He and fellow youngster Alfie Harrison looked solid, and the latter was switched out at half-time by the ever-impressive Trevan Sanusi who racked up 90 minutes in the Sela Weekender by playing the second half of both games.

Newcastle had a late scare when Fabian Schar went down under a clumsy challenge and appeared to be limping, but he remained on the pitch suggesting that he was okay.

We're ready for you, Premier League!

Many fans would have preferred to have seen him withdrawn to make sure he's fit for next week's Premier League clash with Southampton, but the Toonminator has come back from much worse with much less time to recover.

All-in-all it was a big day for the Magpies. The Women beating AC Milan will be a huge boost for them as they prepare for life in the Championship, while two wins in two games against Champions League opposition for the Men isn't a bad way to go into a new season.

Now we just need to get Marc Guehi and a Winger in before next week and we'll all be happy. Won't we? Because let's be honest, if we have to see Miguel Almiron running around with zero purpose again, we're going to have a collective fit.
