Newcastle United appear to have stepped up their efforts to bring in new faces after a difficult few weeks in the transfer window.

Having seen player after player opt for a move elsewhere amid a backdrop of uncertainty surrounding their star player, it seems that Newcastle have pulled their socks up and got back to work.

Deals for Yoane Wissa and Benjamin Sesko rumble on in the background, although whether or not Newcastle will manage to pip Manchester United to the latter is becoming a big debate. Meanwhile, Aaron Ramsdale is in Newcastle for a medical ahead of a loan move.

While all of this is happening, NUFCBlog have now reported that Newcastle have turned their attention back to signing a central defender, which is one of the priority positions that needed addressing in this window.

Newcastle are once again keen on AC Milan's Malick Thiaw

NUFCBlog claims that Newcastle are ready to return for German centre-back Malick Thiaw, who was heavily linked with a move to Newcastle last summer before they focused their efforts on the fruitless Marc Guehi endeavour.

Thiaw had looked set for a move from AC Milan to Como earlier this summer, but talks broke down, and there were hints that Newcastle would pounce then.

A £21.6 million deal was reached between the two clubs before the deal fell apart, which should give Newcastle a pretty good indication of what it would take to get Milan to accept a bid.

Moving for Malcik Thiaw seems like a no-brainer

If Newcastle were as interested in Malick Thiaw as we were led to believe last summer, then we genuinely can't understand why we were there as soon as that Como move fell through with £21 million in hand.

The 23-year-old may have had a drop off in form last season, sure, but for a young German international, you'd expect to be paying way above £21 million, so we should be snapping Milan's hands off.

Eddie Howe can bide his time integrating him into the team as Dan Burn and Fabian Schar can start the season as first-choice pairing while Sven Botman makes sure he's fully fit and Malick Thiaw gets to grips with his new club.

It seems like an absolute no-brainer to us, and we hope there's some truth to the rumour.
