Newcastle United are desperate to make signings before the season opener against Aston Villa next weekend.

The Magpies need several top quality additions, but that has proved to be an issue for them this summer as the players they are aiming for still don't see Newcastle as genuine contenders and have opted for clubs with more trophies in their cabinet - even opting for a side that won nothing last year and finished 15th in the league, just because of their name. That and they've been sold a project that they can back up by having actual staff in place and formal announcements of a new stadium and training ground. Christ, even Manchester United are better run than us, and they're a shambles of a club.

Not having an active CEO in place or a director of football at the club has seriously hampered Newcastle's ability to attract top players, but they haven't given up yet.

Now, as they look to add midfield reinforcements after selling Sean Longstaff and with Joe Willock being made out of balsa wood, the Magpies have turned to a fan-favourite transfer target that never was.

Newcastle have considered Lucas Paqueta this summer

The iPaper have reported that Newcastle now have an interest in West Ham United's controversial Brazilian midfielder and best mate of Bruno Guimaraes, Lucas Paqueta.

Newcastle fans were hoping that Paqueta would follow Bruno to Tyneside when he first arrived, but he ended up heading to the Hammers.

He's been under a bit of a cloud lately as he faced allegations of spot fixing, but he has now been cleared of all charges and can get on with his career ... which could now be at St James' Park.

Personal terms wouldn't be an issue

Paqueta didn't take to the Premier League as quickly as Bruno, but he did eventually become a star turn at West Ham. The club aren't achieving the same levels that he's capable of, which could be giving him itchy feet.

Unfortunately, the iPaper only says that Paqueta is liked by some people at the club and that it was just a name that was mentioned, so we aren't expecting a bid if we're being honest.

However, if they do decide to make a move for the 27-year-old, the hardest part will be agreeing a fee with West Ham as we're sure he'd jump at the chance to be reunited with Bruno.
