In the summer, Newcastle United beat Barcelona and Real Madrid to the signing of highly-rated 18-year-old Spanish winger Antonio Cordero.

The teenage sensation turned his back on remaining in Spain to take a chance on signing for Newcastle with the expectation that he'd be loaned out to a club playing European football.

That didn't happen, and Cordero was shipped off to Belgium to play for Pro League strugglers, KVC Westerlo.

Not only is this below the level he was expecting to play, he's played less than 100 minutes for the Belgian outfit and is yet to start a game.

Newcastle are ready to recall Antonio Cordero

It's another absolute disaster for Shola Ameobi when it comes to finding suitable clubs to take our young players away to develop.

As such, Newcastle are ready to pull the plug on the deal early and recall Cordero in January, according to The Chronicle.

It's bad enough that Cordero went to Westerlo, who are fighting at the bottom of the Belgian Pro League, but the fact that they aren't even using him is an insult to Newcastle.

Could Shola Ameobi buck the trend and find a good move for Antonio Cordero for the second half of the season?

Should Cordero return in January, a decision will have to be made over whether he is sent out elsewhere for the second half of the season or if he remains on Tyneside.

Our feeling is that if he's to go out on loan again, it's only likely that Shola Ameobi will screw it up and send him somewhere entirely unsuitable.

It seems counterproductive to sign these top young players only to send them out to clubs playing well below the level they're expected to reach. If they even play at all, which has been an even bigger issue.
