Newcastle United preparing £63m offer for Bundesliga striker as fans react to underwhelming striker options
Newcastle United are expected to go big in their pursuit of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, with a record-equalling £63 million bid being prepared.
The Express have claimed that Newcastle are ready to offer the Bundesliga club the same fee they paid for Alexander Isak three years ago in a bid to bring their Slovenian forward to Tyneside.
It has been widely reported that Leipzig would want over £60 million to let their star striker leave; it was a fee that proved too high for Arsenal, who felt that their money could be better spent elsewhere.
Meanwhile, depending on where you look, Manchester United either are ready to go up against Newcastle for Sesko, or aren't too bothered right now after signing Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
Newcastle must sign Benjamin Sesko because the alternatives are dire
If Newcastle don't manage to get a deal done for Benjamin Sesko, they do have some other targets in mind, according to several sources, but Newcastle fans are certainly less than impressed with the next players on the list.
Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson is one such player, and after watching him struggle to even hit the target last season, it's safe to say there aren't many Newcastle fans crossing their fingers for that one.
Ollie Watkins is thought to also be on the shortlist, and if we're reaching for Watkins, then we're really scraping the barrel. The 29-year-old was previously touted as a replacement for Callum Wilson, and we could see a move for Watkins if the move for Yoane Wissa falls apart, but he is absolutely not a replacement for Alexander Isak.
Benjamin Sesko is perfectly suited for Newcastle United
Let's hope that £63 million is enough for RB Leipzig to let Benjamin Sesko go, with reports suggesting that the 22-year-old is open to the move, and we'll also keep our fingers crossed that the Manchester United links are just noise and we actually have a clear run at a player.
We have seen online that some fans aren't even that impressed by the Sesko links, but he's definitely, by far, the best bet of all the other names currently on the list. He would have been on our list before we missed out on Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Jonathan David and Hugo Ekitike.
We'll still consider this a big win if we manage to sign him. In the background of losing Alexander Isak, we'll be holding off on the confetti cannons, though.
