Newcastle United once again linked with Chelsea flop as Magpies look to add defensive reinforcements
As is often the way, Chelsea beat Newcastle United to a player signing a couple of years ago, and now, after failing to find his footing at Stamford Bridge, Newcastle are being mooted as a possible destination.
Chelsea beating Newcastle to players in the transfer market is nothing new; they've been doing it for a while, and one player the London club beat the Magpies to in 2023 was Axel Disasi.
Newcastle had been tracking the former Monaco defender before he opted to join Chelsea in the summer of 2023, where he's struggled for form ever since.
In fact, he was so far down the pecking order under Enzo Maresca that Disasi moved to Aston Villa on loan for the second half of last season,n where he made just 10 appearances in all competitions.
Reports from France are linking Newcastle with Axel Disasi
French outlet L'Equipe are now saying that Newcastle have Disasi in their sights again as they look to offer the 27-year-old a route out of Chelsea.
Disasi's asking price is said to be around £26 million, which puts him in the affordable category for Newcastle, much cheaper than top target Giorgio Scalvini's alleged £50 million asking price.
However, we can't see Newcastle's fans being too keen on this link, given his performance against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup last year, which left many fans grateful that we'd missed out on him in '23.
Axel Disasi hasn't done much to impress us since arriving in England
As well as buckling under the pressure in front of the Toon fans, Disasi hasn't been able to nail down a spot in the Premier League, suggesting he's simply not good enough.
On top of that, he is 27, which is way older than what Newcastle are expected to be targeting to bring in this summer.
We don't feel there's much truth in this on,e and it has that stench of agent all over it, trying to drum up interest so he can get a move this summer. Villarreal are interested but Disasi has reportedly specified a desire to remain in the Premier League. As long as it's not with Newcastle, that's fine.
