Newcastle United monitoring situation of 22-year-old Manchester City ace as he enters final year of contract

Recruiting for the midfield isn't a top priority for Newcastle United this summer, but it certainly won't hurt to add depth if the right player comes along.

Newcastle has one of, if not the best midfield trios in the Premier League in Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton, and they are backed up by Joe Willock, Lewis Miley and Sean Longstaff.

It's expected that Sean Longstaff will leave the club this summer which means there will be a space for another midfielder to come in and challenge to break into the starting lineup.

Newcastle have been linked with a few central midfielders as the summer transfer window draws near, but in terms of priority, goalkeeper, central defender, right winger and striker are more pressing concerns.

James McAtee could push for a move away from Manchester City this summer

However, as we've said, if the right player comes along then Newcastle are likely to make a move, and that's why they are keeping tabs on the situation with Manchester City midfielder James McAtee.

McAtee has been outstanding for City when he's been used, and Newcastle have been keeping tabs on him for a while.

Now that he's entering the final year of his contract and the fact that Pep Guardiola is looking to recruit Morgan Gibbs-White or Florian Wirtz, McAtee could angle for a move this summer to find regular football according to The Telegraph.

The Magpies will face stiff competition for McAtee with Nottingham Forest and Bayer Leverkusen at the front of the queue, with Manchester United and AC Milan also keen.

Pep Guardiola has been vocal in his appreciation of McAtee and would no doubt love to keep him at City, but we're sure he won't stand in his way should he put forward a good case for wanting to move, such as wanting regular football, especially if Guardiola can't promise that to him.

We are big fans of McAtee, but we have far more important positions to worry about this summer. If the money is there to fight for McAtee, then by all means, we should go for it, but not at the expense of missing out on one of the aforementioned positions.
