Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali rescues Italy late on in nine-goal World Cup qualifying thriller
Italy were on the cusp of a pretty embarrassing result last night as they took on Israel in the World Cup qualifiers, but Newcastle United man Sandro Tonali spared the Italian's blushes late on.
Israel was heading for a huge point in World Cup Qualifying Group I thanks to an 87th-minute Alessandro Bastoni own goal, making the scoreline 4-4 with time running out.
Italy used to be one of the most feared footballing nations. renowned for their rock-solid defence thanks to the likes of Paulo Maldini at the back.
It seems the current crop is far from those levels, leaking four goals to Israel. Thankfully for Italy, though, they have Super Sandro Tonali at their service.
Sandro Tonali rescued Italy in the 91st minute last night
Newcastle United's midfield maestro had another top-quality game for his country and put the icing on the cake with a stunning 30-yard drive in stoppage time, which sewed up the three points for Italy.
As Newcastle fans, we've seen Tonali's ability to unlock energy reserves late in a game to turn the tide, and last night was possibly one of the most important goals he'll score.
It keeps Italy in the hunt for the coveted top spot in their qualifying group.
Italy are a shadow of their former self
A major tournament without the Italians just doesn't seem right. It has happened in my lifetime, but it just felt odd.
This current Italy team has some fantastic players, but whereas they'd previously have 11 world-class stars, they now only have a couple.
We would say that's great news for England, but if you've watched the Three Lions under Thomas Tuchel, we'd not be so sure. Hopefully, we'll put on a good show out in Belgrade tonight when England take on Serbia.
