Newcastle United have today communicated plans to change the club crest and have asked fans for their feedback.

A three-minute video about the history of Newcastle United and the current club crest has been circulated to members, along with a brief survey about what the badge means to you as a fan, while a statement went up on the official website.

The ultimate aim, of course, is to create a new club crest. This is something that was speculated the minute the PIF-backed takeover went through as something that could definitively mark the beginning of a new era.

With a new stadium or a revamped St James' Park in the works as well as a new training ground, soon, only the name of the club will be the same as it was pre-takeover.

Get ready for a social media meltdown

There's no doubt that this is going to kick up a massive fuss amongst fans, especially with such a high proportion of supporters mired in the club's history and so opposed to change. That's not to say there's anything wrong with that, by the way, but eventually, times do have to change.

There is method to the club's madness, though. The club believes, quite rightly, that there's simply too much detail on the current crest and in this digital age, there is much more they can do with a simplified badge.

Because of the detail in the current badge, when the crest is sewn into shirts, it's far too easy for mistakes to appear - remember the text on the first set of badges from Castore? Creating a new crest with fewer details makes it much easier to replicate and scale for whatever purpose.

Newcastle may choose to employ two badges for the club and shirts

There's a feeling as well that the club could adopt a two-badge look similar to how Liverpool have done. One badge for the shirt and another to represent the club.

Whatever our feelings are as fans, it does seem as though the club are intent on this happening one way or another. Our choice will be to have our say on the new crest, maybe to choose a preferred option, but one way or another, it's going to change.

There will be a meeting next week with fans and the Fan Advisory Board with the club next week to go over the proposals.

To be honest, I'm in favour of this approach. Not so much the changing of the badge, so much as the club putting their foot down and saying...

Newcastle United are reaching out to fans to ask about the club badge

Newcastle United have tried to emphasise that the idea is not to erase the club's history, but to embrace it and carry it into the future.

"As our club grows on the global stage, the symbol that represents us needs to be able to keep pace. It needs to show up clearly and confidently across everything – from kits to screens to merchandise.

"So, we’ve been asking ourselves: how well does our current crest represent the club today? And how well will it serve us tomorrow?"
It’s time to update our crest. This isn’t a decision we take lightly. We love our crest. It’s iconic and has stood us through unforgettable triumphs and testing times. But it was created in a different era. Its intricate design doesn’t always translate well in today’s digital world. And it’s difficult to reproduce it clearly and consistently.

"As football and the world changes, so too must the symbol that unites us. That’s why we’re coming to you This isn’t about walking away from our past. It’s about carrying it forward with pride. The crest is part of our story. It’s on our shirts and inked in our skin. We’ve spoken to our Fan Advisory Board, now we want to hear from you. What should stay the same? What needs to be updated? And how can we embrace our history – not just by honouring it, but by preserving its spirit and building on it, so we can thrive in the years ahead?

"We’re inviting Season Ticket holders and Members to share their views in an independently ran survey."

The club could take a lesson from this 'we're just going to do it' approach

It's something they really need to do with the stadium too.

We get the desire to want to consult fans to keep them happy, but it's stretching out an already laborious process.

You can be as opposed to change all you like, and again, I have no problem with that, but once the changes are made, we will adapt, we always do. Hell, we might even prefer the changes to the status quo.
