Newcastle United instantly dismiss rumour around Arsenal's deadline day move for huge star
Today is transfer deadline day, and while the window is still open, there's always a chance for a crazy story to do the rounds, and Newcastle United have been at the centre of one this morning.
Newcastle aren't expected to do any incoming business today, but there is still a chance that Jamaal Lascelles will end his stay at the club by the end of the day. More on that later.
However, the big story involving Newcastle this morning was nothing to do with Jamaal Lascelles, but someone way more important to the Magpies' season.
Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg has claimed that Arsenal are gearing up for a deadline day move for Sandro Tonali.
We weren't buying this story as soon as it appeared
Instantly, the red flags were up here: Why is Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports Germany breaking a transfer story between two English clubs? It makes no sense.
It didn't take long for a journalist on home soil to shoot the rumour down as Luke Edwards took to X to relay the club's stance on this story.
"Newcastle United have described stories claiming Arsenal have made a late attempt to sign midfielder Sandro Tonali as “stupid” and “complete rubbish.” But other than that, it’s a good story. #nufc"
Sandro Tonali's days on Tyneside do feel numbered, but today is not that day
The mere idea of Newcastle letting one of their star players go on deadline day in January when two other top players in his position are injured is absolute lunacy.
There's simply no way Sandro Tonali leaves Newcastle United today. The summer, meanwhile, is an entirely different story.
Something feels off about Sandro this season, and he may be getting itchy feet. We'd obviously love him to stay, and we could build a team around him, but if he is leaving, we had best make sure we get top dollar.
