Newcastle United in 'advanced talks' with Nottingham Forest figure over move to Tyneside according to reports
Newcastle United have still not hired a replacement for Paul Mitchell, who quit as sporting director less than a year into the job.
Paul Mitchell ruffled a lot of feathers at Newcastle United, and the finger of blame was pointed squarely at his face when analysing the Alexander Isak mess.
Darren Eales was a huge ally for Mitchell, and when it became clear that Eales's time at the club was drawing to a close, Mitchell jumped ship.
Newcastle have been looking for a replacement ever since, and it was Nottingham Forest's Ross Wilson who was identified quite early on as the likely candidate with an expectation that he'd be installed in the role in the summer.
An agreement is thought to be close to bring Ross Wilson to Tyneside
Obviously, that hasn't happened, but today, journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed via X that Wilson has now agreed to leave Nottingham Forest for Newcastle United.
Give Me Sport shed a bit more light on the subject, claiming that the clubs are in 'advanced talks' over a compensation package to free Wilson from his contract and that a resolution is expected to be found.
Wilson is believed to have a strong relationship with Eddie Howe, as well as good connections with the Saudi PIF and co-owner James Reuben, which has worked in his favour during the process.
Newcastle navigated the summer transfer window without a sporting director
Newcastle managed without a sporting director this summer in the transfer market, but there was a feeling that had one been in place, things may have gone a lot smoother and probably quicker.
Having said that, if we'd had a sporting director, we may not have landed on signing Nick Woltemade, so I guess everything happens for a reason.
Working out a compensation package is one thing, but we wonder how long his notice period will be and if there's any gardening leave to be served by Wilson or if they will come to an arrangement on that too.
