There are few players who touched Geordie hearts as much as Jonas Gutierrez. The Argentine winger was a popular figure with the fans during his time at Newcastle United and his treatment under Mike Ashley will always stick out as a top reason why the Sports Direct owner is so loathed on Tyneside.

Arriving from Real Mallorca under Kevin Keegan, Jonas Gutierrez wasn't really a player anyone knew much about other than the fact that he was famous for putting on a Spider-Man mask and firing imaginary webs when he scored.

However, it didn't take long for him to play his way into our hearts as he made a blistering start to his Newcastle career with his debut at Old Trafford.

It was perhaps the end of his Newcastle career that really sealed his place in the club's legend. After beating cancer, Gutierrez returned to action, scoring a goal against West Ham, which ultimately kept Newcastle in the Premier League. Only for him to then be let go via text message by a callous Mike Ashley.

Jonas Gutierrez has revealed where he kept his Spider-Man mask

Gutierrez was back in England last weekend to watch Newcastle lift the League Cup and the Adopted Geordie podcast caught up with the legend for a chat where he was asked about the Spider-Man mask and where he kept it ... barf. He was asked if he kept it in his sock - oh how we wish he kept it in his sock.

"No, I kept it in my underwear,"

Host Andy Jaye, along with Ryan Taylor and Jonas himself, burst out laughing with Jaye, saying it was no wonder he didn't wear it often.

"It smelled good as well!"

If you say so, Jonas.

Jonas' iconic Spider-Man celebration came out of a promise to a young fan

He was then asked how the iconic celebration came about.

"I was playing in Mallorca, I went to the cinema and after the movie I met a child with his dad and he asked me to do something special if I score.

"It was the movie Spider-Man so I had the idea to go to the shop and get a mask and after I score I'll put on the mask. After I moved to Newcastle the fans called me Spider-Man because they knew that celebration."

If only we'd seen more of it at Newcastle, it was definitely iconic.
