Newcastle United held to goalless draw by spirited Wolves - We just don't understand

At this point, we should just have a generic match report saved to copy and paste that talks about how Newcastle United dominated possession without ever threatening.

Once again, Newcastle looked absolutely toothless in attack as they maintained strong possession against a spirited Wolverhampton Wanderers side.

It took until the 85th minute for Newcastle to register a shot on target, which was quickly followed up by another, and the counter remained at two until the full-time whistle blew.

Wolves also managed two attempts on target, but they managed it in half as many shots and with just 33% possession.

Newcastle should bring in a sports psychologist

It may be time to bring in a top-tier sports psychologist to get into why this side is so poor when playing away from home.

There seems to be something that triggers in each player's brain when they get into the final third of the pitch at a ground that isn't St James' Park that makes them instantly forget how to play football.

Some of the passes in the final third today were laughable. We saw so many attempts to play a through ball with nobody in the vicinity.

Newcastle attempted 34 crosses and still only managed two shots on target all game

The through balls were the least of our concerns, though, as the Magpies put in 34 attempted crosses, 10 of which were successful. If only 10 out of 34 attempts are being met by a teammate, something is seriously wrong.

You can take away the actions when the cross is met, anything can happen there, it's the 24 crosses that weren't properly attacked by someone in blue today that's the big concern.

This isn't the first game this season where we've questioned the point of crossing, either. Alan Shearer famously ripped Newcastle to shreds after their Boxing Day defeat to Manchester United which saw them put in 46 crosses and create nothing from them.

It just seems to be the same old story away from home. We can keep the ball all game but we could play for a week solid and still not score. Something needs to be done, but like Eddie Howe, we don't have a clue what that is.
