Newcastle United fans are still waiting to catch their first glimpse of Callum Wilson in action this season after the £20 million man was ruled out with a back injury in pre-season.

There have been several false dawns so far as Eddie Howe has provided 'soon' updates on several occasions regarding a comeback for Callum Wilson.

Last week Howe suggested that the former Bournemouth forward would be available for the game against Nottingham Forest next week, but on Friday, Howe pushed it back to after the international break.

Now it has emerged in a report by The Chronicle, that Wilson has been flown out to Doha to see the same specialist that treated Neymar Jr for his back injury.

Callum Wilson is getting more treatment ahead of his return

Callum Wilson is in Doha visiting the Aspetar Hospital for treatment

Callum Wilson reportedly watched Newcastle's 1-0 win over Arsenal on Saturday with fans in Doha as he gears up for his return to action after the next international break.

The Aspetar hospital has a great record of treating the world's top stars including Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland, so Wilson is in good hands, but they aren't miracle workers.

They will get him back to fitness, but there'll be no guarantees that it will be his last of the season.

Callum Wilson's contract is up in the summer

The feeling amongst fans is now that we must replace Wilson ASAP as he cannot be relied upon to even be a backup option for Alexander Isak never mind as the player who pushes him to be better.

Wilson's contract is due to expire in the summer and there's a strong chance we lose him for free which would be a sad end to what has at times promised to be a stunning career at the club.

Not that we're saying that Wilson hasn't been a good signing, he absolutely has, but lately when the injuries outweigh the goals and indeed the appearances, it's time to let go.
