Newcastle United have reportedly offered £39m star new five-year contract to ward off suitors
Newcastle United have today announced the arrival of a new sporting director as Ross Wilson has joined the Magpies from Nottingham Forest.
As we reported yesterday, one of Wilson's first tasks will be to tie down several key players to new deals.
Tino Livramento and Sandro Tonali already have eyes on them, and new deals should put off any potential suitors from making any advances.
Sven Botman, while not in immediate threat of being able to leave the club on a free, does have less than two years remaining on his contract, and the club would be wise to extend his current terms.
Bruno Guimaraes has been offered a new contract this week according to UOL
However, the first contract rumour to appear following Wilson's appointment is not of these players, with a report from UOL in Brazil suggesting the Magpies have offered a contract up to 2030 to captain Bruno Guimaraes.
The £39 million signing from Lyon has become a hugely important figure at the club, and it would make sense to tie him down long-term, although given his love for the club, we don't feel there's much danger of him leaving. Especially not for Saudi Arabia, which is what the UOL report claims is the reason for the new deal.
They suggest that Newcastle are offering Bruno an improved contract to ward off advances from the Saudi Pro League.
Bruno's current deal runs until 2028
Bruno just signed a new deal not so long ago, and his current contract runs to 2028. We're not sure that Bruno is a priority right now, especially as he's the highest-paid player at the club.
The fact that the report is originating from Brazil also makes us question the validity of the claims.
We're not opposed to the club trying to add another couple of years to his stay, but the timing of this one just doesn't feel right, especially when the three aforementioned players' contracts seem more pressing.
