Newcastle United hit five goals past Crystal Palace at St James' Park on Wednesday night, sending the Magpies into third place in the Premier League.

The damage was done in the first half as Newcastle went into the break 4-0 up, adding one more for good measure before the hour mark and then freewheeling to victory.

It's now nine goals in the last two games for Newcastle, and 15 goals in the last five Premier League games. Not bad at all, eh?

In fact, if you look at the results of our last six Premier League games, Newcastle have scored an increasing number of goals consecutively in the last six matches, starting with the blank at Anfield.

Can Newcastle hit Aston Villa for six on Saturday to keep the trend going?

Newcastle are supposedly the first team in Premier League history to do so. Whether or not that's something that's recorded, who knows, but it's technically a record so we're having it.

Of course, the next step would be to whack six past Aston Villa on Saturday night, which might be asking a bit much of the lads, especially as it will be their third game in under a week.

A lot will depend on how Unai Emery's boys react to the trying midweek game against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, which saw them narrowly miss out on progression after a quality second-leg battle.

We'll take any form of win over Aston Villa on Saturday

To be honest, though, as fun as it is seeing us score one more each game, we'd be more than happy with a 1-0 win on Saturday away to an in-form Aston Villa.

A win against Villa would send a huge message to the Champions League-chasing pack, and while it wouldn't mathematically guarantee us a spot in the top competition, you'd have to be a brave soul to bet against us.

Arsenal progressed in the Champions League last night, by the way, which could be good news for Newcastle as they can't win the league now, so they could focus their efforts on winning the ECL and thus dropping the ball in the league, so we can steal second place.
