Newcastle United have a unique player in Nick Woltemade - German struggles to liken himself to any striker
Newcastle United signed one of the hottest up-and-coming talents this summer when they beat Bayern Munich to the signing of Germany international Nick Woltemade.
Just two years ago, Woltemade was playing in the third tier of German football, and now, after one season in the Bundesliga, he's leading the line for the German national team, finished top scorer at the U21 European Championships and is the record transfer signing at Newcastle United.
The lad's rise to the top has been impressive, but it's also been so rapid that there are some who questioned whether Newcastle have jumped the gun a bit in bringing him to the Premier League.
A goal on his debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend allayed some of those fears, and listening to him speak, you can tell that he's got his head on straight and is willing to do what it takes to be a success.
Nick Woltemade is hard to compare to any one striker
Standing at 6'6", it's easy to assume that Woltemade would be the ideal target man, but he actually prefers the ball at his feet, which makes it hard to compare him to any other striker. Even the man himself struggled to do so when asked on Sky Sports' Saturday Social.
"Yeah, this could be a difficult question. There are not too many 6'6" strikers or even players in the league, and most of them are centre-backs or stuff. I would say a bit of [Harry] Kane, a bit of [Kai] Havertz, maybe a bit of [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic. I don't know, like it's hard to say, like you have an idea or anyone has an idea. I don't know.
"I mean I think it's really interesting because maybe people who haven't watched you before, because of your height, have a bit of a misconception.
"I don't want to say like I'm the only guy who plays like this. I don't want to say that, but I think it's hard to find. I don't know. Maybe the fans have an idea. I don't know."
Nick Woltemade has created a decent striker cocktail
I mean, if you want to combine three strikers into one, you could do a lot worse than Zlatan, Kane and Havertz to be fair. He could maybe have pandered a bit and said Alan Shearer, but we get it, he'd rather be genuine.
Hopefully, we'll soon see plenty of examples of why he's named these three players. We particularly hope he has the finishing ability of Kane; that would be nice.
For now, we'll take the finishing of Jon Stead as it's better than what we've had all season.
