Newcastle United handed huge transfer hope after club confirm new signing

It has been a typically slow start in the transfer window for Newcastle United but things are starting to gather pace now.

When we say gathering pace we're still talking about acceleration akin to that of a Reliant Robin, but at least there's forward momentum.

Earlier this week the Magpies had a £45 million bid rejected by Nottingham Forest for Anthony Elanga. It was a ridiculous bid by Newcastle but it least it was a bid.

Meanwhile, the one deal that looked like it would be wrapped up on week one is still nowhere near being completed, but there have been positive signs.

Burnley have signed a new goalkeeper which could open the door for James Trafford to leave

Newcastle were close to signing James Trafford 12 months ago before he deal fell apart, but both Trafford and Newcastle have remained keen, and it seemed like it would be a one-yard tap-in for Newcastle to get the deal done this summer.

Of course there's the wrinkle that Burnley are back in the Premier League and Trafford had an outstanding season as part of that promotion campaign which have both affected his value, but you'd still think Burnley and Newcastle could have thrashed that out by now.

While the two clubs haggle over a price for Trafford, though, Burnley have signed a new goalkeeper hinting that they could be about to let Trafford leave.

Burnley always knock it out of the park with their signing announcements

Announced in typical Burnley fashion, the club announced the arrival of 21-year-old Max Weiß with a Mission: Impossible themed video.

Another young, up and coming goalkeeper seems like the perfect replacement for James Trafford, so now that Weiß is on board, hopefully, Newcastle and Burnley can get the deal for Trafford done.

We expect they'll wait until next week to conclude the deal with the new PSR reporting cycle to start on Tuesday, but as long as it gets done soon we can wait a few more days.
